Porsche named top prestigious luxury automobile brand for 2008


Porsche CarATLANTA - For the fourth year running, America’s most affluent consumers have declared Porsche the most prestigious car available today. The Luxury Institute’s 2008 independent nationwide survey of luxury auto brands rated Porsche tops against eleven of the world’s most prestigious car brands. Lexus and Mercedes ranked second and third, respectively.

The Luxury Institute conducted an online survey of more than 1,600 American consumers – with an average income of $349,000 and average net worth of $3.7 million. This year’s survey respondents strongly associated Porsche with its stellar performance reputation, summing up their top choice as “world-class sports cars for the true connoisseur.” The proprietary 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index survey is the only measure of the reputation of leading brands among wealthy Americans.

“The Luxury Institute’s surveys are impartial and objective,” said Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute. “Our surveys inform luxury CEOs on the health of their brands in no uncertain terms so they can take action to enhance relationships with prospects and customers.”

“Customer perception is everything in the luxury car market. This distinction helps us know that we are successfully delivering on our brand values in a very competitive automobile market,” said Detlev von Platen, Porsche Cars North America President and CEO.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc., based in Atlanta, Ga., and, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., based in Mississauga, Ont., are the two importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada respectively.

Mitsubishi to launch the new Evolution X, luxury sedan in India


Japanese car maker, Mitsubishi Motors is all set to enter the luxury sedan category in India with the launch of the Lancer Evolution X, also known as Evo 10. The evolution X will compete with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat, Nissan Teana and Audi A4 in the segment.

According to Mitsubishi, the Evolution X will be launched in early 2009 for the Indian market,would be a completely imported car as the company has no plans to manufacture it locally. This would push up the cost of Evo 10 due to import duties and taxes. The five-seaterEvo 10 is based on a completely new platform such as engine, exterior and interior design and is surprisingly light in weight, thanks to the aluminium engine block under the hood. The four-door car is powered by a 2-litre engine that gives out 295 bhp power. In addition, to further push the driving experience, the company has given the car a four-wheel drive (4WD) option.

Auto experts attribute the surge in demand for luxury cars in India is due to the rising economy of the country, which has led to better salaries among the country’s upper-middle-class. The demand is further expected to grow to 15,000 units a year by 2011-12, say analysts.

Based on the sales response, the company will decide whether the car can be manufacturered locally or not.

Globally the Evo10 is priced at Rs12 lakh($30,473) to 13 lakh ($32,697) depending on the variant. However with the imposed duties on import, the cost will soar upto Rs21.70-Rs 23.5 lakh.

The company is also going to launch the Outlander sports utility vehicle in the later part of 2008, which would be manufactured at the Mitsubishi plant in Chennai.

Mercedes-Benz at New York Auto Show 2008


Mercedes-Benz is presenting three new SUVs equipped with the world’s latest and cleanest diesel engine at the New York International Auto Show 2008. The new R 320 BlueTEC, ML 320 BlueTEC and GL 320 BlueTEC use the highly efficient AdBlue exhaust aftertreatment system and are able to undercut the stringent Bin 5 limits applicable in the USA, with the potential to meet the coming EU6 standards.

Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the meticulously revamped new generation of the successful M-Class. The dynamic, stylish SUV now has even more distinctive characteristics, and looks even sportier and more powerful. The M-Class standard specification has also been significantly upgraded. It now includes the unique, anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE and NECK-PRO head restraints, as well as an all-new, high-performance telematics system. The Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG, the dynamic top-of-the-line M‑Class, is also set to become more distinctive and striking.

Fastest ever Volkswagen lands in New Zealand


The new Passat R36 is powered by a 220 kW (300 hp) 3.6 litre six cylinder direct injection petrol engine (3.6 FSI). Power transmission is handled by a direct shift gearbox (DSG) and permanent four-wheel drive (4Motion). The top speed of the Passat R36 is electronically regulated at 250kph. In terms of speed, the Passat R36 outstrips every other Volkswagenin accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h: the sedan reaches the 100-km/h mark in 5.6 seconds (5.8 seconds for the Variant). Performance enhancements are transmitted to the road courtesy of a 25mm sports suspension system.

The new Passat R36 was conceived by “Volkswagen Individual”, the specialist vehicles division of the global giant. Following the original Golf R32 and the recently launched Touareg R50, the Passat R36 will be the third series version to be debuting under the “R” sports label. The “R32” label already represents a top-selling model; the first Golf R32 (177 kW / 241 hp) based on the fourth Golf generation and introduced in 2002, took off better than expected in every way; 14,000 cars were sold. In 2005 the second Golf R32, the Mark V version with 184 kW / 250 hp, equipped with 4Motion four-wheel drive as standard equipment, was introduced. It was also a terrific seller. And it continues to sell well today. Now, the “R36” will show how sporty a Passat Sedan and a Passat Variant can really be.

Visually, a whole range of specific features shows the new Passat R36 to be the most dynamic model. These include an R-specific front bumper with grille in a matte chrome finish, including the dual fins of the upper radiator grille. The rear of the Passat R36 sedan features a newly designed bootlid spoiler; in the case of the Passat Variant R36 a new roof edge spoiler provides additional downward force to the rear axle. Identical for both body versions are the chrome dual exhaust pipes, newly designed 18-inch “Omanyt” alloy wheels and body coloured wheel arch extensions. The signature blue painted brake callipers are another key feature.

Volkswagen Individual designed interior equipment especially for the sportiest Passat. The leather multifunction steering wheel in R design is especially slip-proof; it features an R36 logo in the lower spoke. The pedals have a stainless steel finish. In addition, as standard equipment the Passat R36 will be delivered with a sport seating system together with electric 12-way adjustment (including pneumatically adjustable side support), R36 door sill trims, new instrument lighting (white illumination) and an automatic transmission selector lever in aluminium look. Rear seat occupants are not forgotten with a sport seating system that includes seat heating.

The fastest ever production car from Volkswagen is now available in New Zealand. Standard specifications include brushed aluminium trim inserts, 8 airbags, bixenon headlights with active front lighting, keyless access and start and tyre pressure monitoring.

The Passat R36 Sedan has a RRP of $82,990 and Passat R36 Variant $85,990.

Dean Sheed, the Volkswagen General Manager for New Zealand, says that the Passat R36 has some great sports car DNA: “With icons such as Scirocco and Corrado, and of course the legendary Golf GTI and Polo GTI, Volkswagen has a proven history of producing successful sports cars. The first of the R-Series was of course, the Golf R32. In Mark V guise, the combination of a practical 5 door family hatch with sports car performance has proven to be well accepted by our customers. To date over 225 units have been delivered to customers here in New Zealand.”

On the Passat R36, Sheed commented: “The dynamic genes have been passed onto the Passat R36. The performance of a sports car has been moulded into the body of a functional Passat Sedan or Variant. Toyota to bring its hybrid sedan to India


Toyota Motors has an answer to growing emission concerns and rising fuel costs in the form of its hybrid sedan Prius, which it plans to bring to India shortly.

The Toyota Prius is sold in nearly 40 countries around the globe, and it is regarded as being the most fuel efficient midsize car in the United States. Additionally, it is declared as the third least carbon emitting vehicle in Britain.

The Toyota Prius runs both on electricity and fuel. In the long run, the car rewards its owner with lower maintenance costs and greater fuel efficiency.

According to the Vice Chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motors Mr. Vikram Kirloskar, the company has not set up a deadline as such for the introduction of the vehicle. He also added that they will need to gear up their servicing abilities at their dealership networks to provide service to this car.

ENGINE
The 125 cc single cylinder engine that provides the life and soul of these Aprilias is a state-of-the-art two stroke. On the RX 125 and SX 125, Aprilia has succeeded in perfecting its two stroke design to bring it in line with the strict new Euro 3 standard without any loss of performance or riding satisfaction. BRAKES AND SUSPENSION

The front brakes feature a 260 mm disc and two-piston floating caliper while the back brake incorporates a 220 mm disc and another floating piston.

The robust, steel, double cradle, trellis frame is coupled to an over-sized suspension system. At the front is a mighty, 40 mm upside down telescopic fork offering wheel travel of 260 mm.

At the back, the long steel swingarm used to obtain maximum traction is damped by a prestigious hydraulic monoshock with piggy back cylinder. Rear wheel travel is 270 mm.

WHEELS
Specialist machines like the RX and SX demand top quality components. The wheels, for example, are fundamentally important to this type of motorcycle, having to combine the contrasting properties of strength and lightness. The RX and SX are equipped with aluminium wheels. The RX is fitted with a classic enduro racing front wheel of 21” in diameter and a 90/90-21” tyre for fantastic grip on all sorts of surface. The 18” rear wheel is fitted with a 120/90 tyre, again in keeping with the best off-road traditions.

Just like top sports motards, the SX boasts lightweight 17 inch, wide profile wheels and generous sports tyres, 110/70-17” and 150/60-17” for maximum grip under all conditions.

Volkswagen & Audi set up new corporate sales office in Mumbai

Volkswagen Group, Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer is poised to further strengthen its Indian operations with the setting up of a new corporate sales office in Mumbai.

The new corporate sales office located at Bandra Kurla Complex will help Volkswagen and Audi in catering to its customers and dealers in India better.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joerg Mueller, President and Managing Director Volkswagen Group India remarked, “Our Indian operations play a significant role in our overall strategy. To further strengthen the growth in India we will increase our Volkswagen and Audi dealerships across the country from 14 at present to approximately 150 by 2011. We look forward to a long-term relationship with the country.”

In 2007, Volkswagen had first introduced to the Indian market, its indigenously built Volkswagen Passat to cater to the premium automobile segment. This was followed by the recent successful launch of the Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen’s mid-sized premium car in India. Volkswagen dealerships are based in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Audi entered the Indian market in 2005. The Audi model range in India includes the Audi A8, Audi Q7, Audi A6, Audi A4 and Audi TT and is available at present in seven dealerships across the country: in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

To further increase their footprints in the country Volkswagen offers its top models like the Phaeton and the Touareg as CBUs. Audi will introduce the super sports car Audi R8 to the Indian market in autumn 2008.

BMW 118d & 123d Convertible go on sale


Two of BMW’s most popular diesel engines are now available in the 1 Series Convertible. BMW’s most economical four-cylinder diesel engine ever and the award-winning twin –turbocharged unit are a timely introduction for new car buyers seeking open-air motoring but are worried about rising fuel costs.

The 118d Convertible is powered by a 1,995cc single turbocharged engine producing 143hp and 300Nm of torque. This results in a zero BMW-118d-Convertibleto 62mph time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 129mph. Most impressive though is the 118d Convertible’s ability to record a combined consumption figure of 57.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 129g/km. This means the vehicle, courtesy of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies, is the most economical and least polluting convertible car in its class.

For those customers demanding greater performance the 123d Convertible comes with a 1,995cc twin-turbocharged engine producing 204hp and 400Nm of torque. This propels the 123d Convertible from zero to 62mph in 7.5 seconds before going on to a top speed of 143mph. It too comes with all the facets of EfficientDynamics and thus records a combined consumption figure of 52.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 144g/km – again the lowest compared to any competitor product.

Both models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. The BMW 118d Convertible is priced from £23,660 OTR, while the BMW 123d Convertible starts at £28,105 OTR.

Seven-speed double clutch transmission slots into 3 Series:
The BMW 3 Series Coupé and Convertible are now available with a seven-speed double clutch transmission for enhanced performance and economy. The new gearbox, which applies similar technology to that used in an M3 equipped with M DCT, is now offered on the 335i Coupé and Convertible models. It improves performance and economy by splitting the gearbox into the two assemblies, each with their own clutch. This way as the revs build or decrease in the current gear another one is already selected. A near seamless transition in gears and power is thus achieved benefitting both acceleration and consumption. The DCT gearbox is offered as a £1,640 option.

News of the new gearbox comes as the new six-cylinder 2,993cc diesel engine announced for the new 3 Series Saloon and Touring models is offered in the Coupé range. Now the BMW 330d Coupé is powered by a 245hp powerplant, 14hp more than the previous engine, and 520Nm of torque, 20 Nm more than before. The upgrade in performance means the 330d Coupé achieves zero to 62mph in 6.0 seconds compared to 6.6 seconds previously, while also being capable of 49.6mpg on the combined cycle (Vs 46.3mpg) and emissions of 152g/km (Vs. 160g/km).

X3 production reaches half million mark:
The 500,000th BMW X3 has rolled off the production line at Magna Steyr, in Graz, Austria. BMW’s compact Sports Activity Vehicle has followed in the X5’s wheel tracks to become the second X model in the BMW product range to pass the half million milestone. To date a total of more than 1.25 million X models have been sold worldwide, confirming the international success story of these benchmark vehicles.

This milestone has passed at the same time the nomenclature of the X3 and X5 ranges changes to mirror that of the X6. Now, for example, the 3.0-litre diesel-powered X3 will be referred to as the BMW X3 xDrive30d. Every other X3 model will follow this format with the last two digits and letter denoting which engine is used.

New BMW X3 models announced:
Two special edition BMW X3s are now available in the UK. The BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Edition Premium and the BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Edition Exclusive come with additional equipment as standard compared to existing models. The Edition Premium adds uniquely-styled 17-inch light alloy wheels, chrome exhaust pipe and chrome kidney grille with graphite vertical slats, Space Grey metallic paint and matching interior trim. Pearlpoint cloth and leather upholstery is standard but can be upgraded to Nevada leather upholstery.

The BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Edition Exclusive comes with bespoke 18-inch light alloy wheels, chrome exhaust pipe and chrome kidney grille with graphite vertical slats, extended lighting, headlight wash and xenon headlights. To complete the package Mineral Green metallic paint, Nevada leather upholstery and a Light Walnut wood interior trim are standard.

The BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Edition Premium costs £30,345 OTR and the BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Edition Exclusive costs £31,925 OTR.

30 years of BMW M cars:
2008 marks the 30th anniversary of BMW M. Born from the M1 project of 1978 when the company built a mid-engined racing car to compete in a newly formed ProCar series, BMW M has since gone on to represent the pinnacle of performance BMWs.

Its adage of ‘From the race track to the road’ applies to the development of all its products. The BMW M3 is still the most successful touring car in history and this racing heritage is why M products remain popular with enthusiasts. Such demand is the reason BMW M recently delivered its 300,000th vehicle. The BMW M3 Coupé in Alpine White was presented to a customer in Regensburg, the home of M3 production.

Today BMW M cars account for around one percent of the BMW Group’s overall turnover worldwide with the USA, UK and Germany representing the three biggest markets.

Google Send to Car gets personal:
BMW’s innovative ConnectedDrive facility is now available with added capability courtesy of a link-up with Google. Customers who have specified their cars with navigation are able to use a new Google Send function to locate non-business addresses. The enhanced Google Send allows the driver to locate personal addresses as well as 750,000 business listings.

Google Send to Car allows the user to send the desired address straight through to the car’s navigation system from his or her office desk for added convenience, thus reducing the need to input navigation addresses manually. BMW is the only car manufacturer currently able to offer the bespoke Google function.

BMW wins more awards:
BMW has been presented with the Editor’s Award by What Car? magazine at its prestigious Green Awards held at London Motor Show. The marque scooped the honour for its widespread EfficientDynamics programme. It is the second time the car industry’s buying bible has commended the BMW product range for the advances engineers have made in performance, emissions and fuel consumption. What Car? awarded a similar accolade to BMW at its annual new car awards ceremony held in January, 2008.

BMW has also been presented with two honours in the 2008 Green Car Awards from the Environmental Transport Association. The BMW 520d won the Executive category and the BMW 320d the Large Family award for their EfficientDynamics derived low CO2 emissions figures and fuel consumption.

The Environmental Transport Association assessed over 1,300 cars on sale, examining their power, emissions, fuel efficiency and even the amount of noise produced to create a definitive ‘green’ buying guide for customers. Judges noted that BMW had achieved an 11 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions during the past 12 months with four BMW Group models making it into the top five ‘most improved category’.

The BMW 5 Series scooped the award for Best Executive car in the Fleet World Honours. The medium sized executive car beat other premium rivals to top spot on account of its driving dynamics, class-leading performance, consumption and emissions, and its comparative low running costs. The BMW 3 Series won Best Compact Executive car, the BMW X5 won Best SUV, while the BMW Group was presented with an industry-wide award for its EfficientDynamics programme.

BMW 118d sets new unofficial 24-hour record:
A new 24 hour record has been set in a BMW 118d. The team of drivers from BMW Car magazine took the current World Green Car of the Year on a pan-European endurance test to see what real-world performance figures could be achieved in the award-winning vehicle.

Their BMW 118d covered 1,461.9 miles in its 14 European country marathon, with the team recording an average speed of 71.6 mph, but using just 150 litres of fuel. The average consumption figure of 43.4 mpg was commendable despite some faster autobahn driving and high-gear mountain passes being negotiated en route.

The drive began in the UK and finished in the Czech Republic and the team nearly made it 15 countries but ran out of time only 50kms from the Polish border. The four-man crew consumed 12,000 calories in the form of sweets, snacks and fizzy drinks - next stop the dentist then…

Ford introduces all-new ‘KA
