Recently I discovered Dexter, and have spent the last week catching up on the first season. Twisted, but very entertaining, and definitely different than all the crime investigation shows available (but still love). The main character’s voice overs happen throughout, always providing more information to who he really is, what he’s thinking, what he wants. At the end of an episode, I sat straight up as I heard the conversation between Dexter and his girlfriend.
He asked “Do you have a dream…for your life…your future?” After no response he continues with “I want to someday be content and just feel comfortable like everyone else. I want…” and she interrupted “…a normal life. That’s all I’ve wanted. A normal life. Just that.” Both smiled with an unspoken agreement and understanding.
I suppose it’s not healthy to relate to a serial killer in a show but I’ve never heard it said quite so simple and perfect. That is all I want, too. Just that. A normal life.
What normal is, I have no idea, but I do hope one day I am able to find it and bask in its ordinariness.
